Saltram Returns to the Heart of the Barossa
September 20, 2002
Saltram has always been at the very heart of the Barossa, both metaphorically
and literally, sitting as it does at the foot of the eastern hills where the
Barossa Valley floor folds into the adjacent Eden Valley.
Saltram has occupied this unique position since 1859 and it is with much
delight Saltram’s first thorough and sympathetic rejuvenation in more than
half a century has now been completed.
Everything that was old at Saltram is new again.
The winery itself has undergone a thorough refurbishment with a new-look
cellar door, re-planted and manicured gardens, the completely new Salters
restaurant and the delightfully restored heart of Saltram, Mamre Brook House.
The wines themselves have been updated, too, with new look labels reinforcing
the winery’s heritage and linking for the first time, all the wines under the
Saltram banner.
From the majesty of the 1998 Saltram No.1 Shiraz through to the terrific
value Saltram varietal range, Saltram wines have never looked so good.
Thus September 20, 2002 was a celebration of renaissance. A coming together
of many people who have made Saltram such a unique place over the past 50 years,
joined by those who are descendants of the original Salter’s who started it all
in the 1850s.
Current custodian of Saltram, winemaker Nigel Dolan, who was born in Mamre
Brook House while his father Brian was General Manager, expressed his pride at
being the lucky person overseeing the renaissance of a winery so close to his
heart.
“I think my father would be extremely proud today, and I know that all the
people here to share this great lunch know that the future of Saltram is in
very safe hands.”
“With the investment in Saltram Cellar Door and Salters Restaurant I am
excited to see Saltram returning to the position it rightly should hold – at
the very heart of the Barossa.”
