A new name and look – but still plenty of that classic Saltram style

The range of Saltram varietal wines has always held classic appeal for the discerning
drinkers of Australia and the world – and the new-look varietal wines are probably
the best value collection to have been released under this label.
Six new Saltram varietal wines set a benchmark in quality and value and the 2002
whites are already making quite a bit of a stir among the cognoscenti.
The 2002 Semillon has already snuck its way into a few hearts and why wouldn’t
it with its lovely lifted grassy aromas and flavours and wonderfully crisp palate.
Made from 100% Barossa fruit this is a bona fide classic and certainly an ideal
wine for summer quaffing.
Alongside the excellent 2002 Semillon are three more wines from this vintage
that many people are describing as the best in more than a decade for white varieties
in warm regions.
The 2002 Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Unwooded Chardonnay are each terrific
expressions of their variety and classy winemaking from the Nigel Dolan-led team.
The Sauvignon Blanc has lifted herbaceous notes and zesty acidity, the Chardonnay
classic peach and melon notes with a whisper of toasty oak and the Unwooded
Chardonnay expresses unadulterated chardonnay fruit character and a fresh, soft
palate.
As everybody in the wine drinking world knows, Nigel Dolan is one of the best
red winemakers in Australia and the new Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon give everyday
drinkers a chance to sample some of his style.
A former Barossa Winemaker of the Year and finalist in the Qantas Australian
Winemaker of the Year, Dolan is best known for his extraordinary Saltram No. 1
Barossa Shiraz and his intense and characterful Saltram Mamre Brook Barossa
wines. But Nigel is equally proud of his Saltram varietal wines, afterall more
people will drink these than the No.1.
The 2001 Shiraz is spicy, savoury and classically varietal while the 2001
Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas and flavours of dark berries and cassis. Both
wines will be great drinking in the short term but will also benefit from a year
or two in the cellar to develop a little extra complexity.
