Saltram Barossa - A tribute to a great Australian region
February 28, 2003
The Barossa Valley’s Saltram winery reaches another milestone in its long
history with the launch of its aptly named Saltram Barossa range of wines
from today.
The Saltram Barossa Range calls attention to the wineries strong ties
with the Barossa region, its ongoing commitment to winemaking excellence
and diversity and quality of its vineyards.
Since taking over as Saltram Winemaker in 1992, Nigel Dolan has established
himself and the winery as a leader in the region in much the same way his
father Brian did from 1949 until 1979.
Available from today is a 2002 Saltram Barossa Chardonnay, 2001 Saltram
Barossa Cabernet Merlot and 2001 Saltram Barossa Shiraz, with a Semillon
Sauvignon Blanc to follow later this year.
The 2002 Saltram Barossa Chardonnay is a soft, fresh example of the style
with much of the fruit sourced in the cool climes of the Barossa’s Eden Valley
sub-region. The wine shows well-balanced fruit flavours of peaches and stone
fruit with a hint of barrel ferment characters.
The 2001 Saltram Barossa Cabernet Merlot is a medium-full bodied blend
of these two famous varieties with excellent fruit characters of blackcurrant
and chocolate, together with subtle oak and real generosity and warmth.
The 2001 Saltram Barossa Shiraz is a richly, flavoured wine crafted
from the Barossa’s most renowned variety, and exhibits delicious hallmarks
of complex fruit with flavours or ripe cherries and plums mixed with
well-integrated oak.
Featuring new colour co-ordinated labels the Saltram Barossa range of
wines provide wine lovers with a comprehensive offering from a great Barossa
winery. With the Barossa range providing the perfect progression between
the Saltram Varietal range of wines and Saltram Mamre Brook wines.
Strengthening ties with the Barossa, the new look labels draw attention
to Saltram’s winemaking history dating back to 1859 and the historical Mamre
Brook house. With elements of this label design now carried across the
Saltram portfolio of wines sure to reassure consumers.
Saltram wineries award winning association with the Barossa Valley dates
back to when William Salter arrived in the Barossa in 1844 before making
wine in 1859 at the Saltram winery. It’s impossible to talk about the
Barossa Valley winemaking region without mentioning Saltram.
The same winery, although recently refurbished, still sits today at the
heart of Salter’s Gully on the Road to Angaston.
