Nigel Dolan - Baron of the Barossa!
28 April 2003
Beringer Blass' Senior Red Winemaker and Saltram Chief
Winemaker, Nigel Dolan was made a ‘Baron of the Barossa’
at a grand dinner on Friday night as part of the 2003 Barossa
Vintage Festival.
“Certainly a significant achievement for Nigel and one
which is fitting for a winemaker who continues to showcase
such passion for the Barossa,” said Jamie Odell. “Our congratulations
go out to Nigel on his induction as a Baron of the Barossa.”
Nigel had already established a reputation as one of the
best winemakers in South Australia after his first 10 years
at Saltram. His appointment as a ‘Baron of the Barossa’
has further enhanced his stature as a Barossa, South Australian
and Australian great. Nigel now joins fellow winemaking
legends like Wolf Blass, John Glaetzer, Peter Lehmann and
Stephen Henschke as a ‘Baron of the Barossa’.
In his time at Saltram he has been named South Australian
Red Winemaker of the Year in 1996, Barossa Winemaker of
the Year in 2000, and in 2001 he was a finalist in the Qantas
Australian Winemaker of the Year competition. His flagship
Saltram No.1 Shiraz is now considered one of the benchmark
Barossa Valley Shiraz wines while the Mamre Brook Cabernet
Sauvignon and Shiraz continue to win accolades and gold
medals wherever they are shown.
Nigel is also one of Australia’s most highly regarded wine
judges having been a senior judge at the Royal Shows of
Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and many regional shows across
the country.
An induction ceremony is held at the biennial dinner to
introduce new Barons to the Fraternity, with membership being
for life. Inductees are those people who have consistently
striven to promote and protect the Barossa region and its
essential winemaking nature, and have devoted large portions
of their working lives to the preservation and maintenance
of the Valley's unique, priceless tradition and culture.
