Discover Saltram Wines - History & Heritage in a Bottle

May 2003

A spotlight has shone on the Barossa Valley’s Saltram winery since 1844 and in the last twelve months its star has begun to shine even brighter, with the opening of a revamped cellar door and a new look range of wines.

Saltram is one of the regions most established and award winning wineries, having strong family ties with the Barossa for six generations. With the original house at the winery, Mamre Brook, being home to Saltram’s chief winemaker up to and including current winemaker Nigel Dolan.

In September last year, a refurbished new-look cellar door was opened at the winery. Along with re-planted and manicured gardens, a completely new Salters restaurant and restoration work finalised on Mamre Brook House.

The winery revamp also signalled a renaissance for the Saltram brand, with the range of wines having also undergone a facelift. The Saltram wines now feature new colour co-ordinated label designs that draw attention to Saltram’s winemaking history dating back to 1859 and the historical Mamre Brook house. Elements of the label design now feature across each range of wines within the Saltram portfolio in an effort to reassure consumers about their selection

At the premium end of the portfolio is Saltram’s flagship, the Saltram No.1 Shiraz. The No.1 epitomises a red winemaking philosophy that has been followed since the first No.1 was released in 1993. It is always an intensely flavoured yet beautifully integrated and balanced wine and retails for approximately $65 per bottle.

April saw the release onto the market of the double international gold medal winning, and multiple gold medal winning at Australian wine shows, 1999 Saltram No.1 Shiraz. This 1999 Saltram No.1 achieved the award of winning the only gold in its category at the highly prestigious 2002 International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in October.

The first tier of wines within the Saltram portfolio are the Saltram Mamre Brook range of wines. The wines are named after Mamre Brook House and are a testament to the history of the Saltram winery. With all the fruit for Saltram Mamre Brook Chardonnay, Saltram Mamre Brook Cabernet Sauvignon and Saltram Mamre Brook Shiraz being sourced exclusively from the Barossa Valley region. The Saltram Mamre Brook wines retail for around $18 - $20 per bottle.

The second tier of wines within the Saltram portfolio call attention to the wineries strong ties with the Barossa region, the Saltram Barossa range. The Saltram Barossa range of wines provide the perfect progression between the Saltram Varietals range and the Saltram Mamre Brook wines, and are currently comprised of a Chardonnay, Cabernet Merlot and Shiraz. The Barossa Range of wines retail for around $14 - $16 per bottle. A Semillon Sauvignon Blanc will be added to this range with the release of the 2003 vintage.

At the entry point into the Saltram portfolio is the Saltram Varietal range of wines. The Saltram Varietals range offers excellent value for money from the established and award winning Saltram brand. The simple premise behind this range is to be the best value varietal wines in Australia. The range includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Unwooded Chardonnay, Chardonnay, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and available at retail for around $9 - $11 per bottle.
