Saltram Wine Estate is proud to announce the release of
its iconic 2001 “No. 1” Shiraz, made by multi-award
winning Senior Winemaker, Nigel Dolan.
Saltram No. 1 2001 Shiraz continues a celebration of Barossa
Shiraz which began with Saltram’s “first”
wine created by Edward Salter, son of William, in 1862.
The wine tells a story of the undeniable quality of Barossa
Shiraz and the winemaking skills of Saltram’s Senior
Winemaker. Nigel Dolan crafted this latest vintage with
the continuing philosophy of the wine in mind – evolutionary
and constantly looking forward as it seeks to impress the
changing palates of today’s Shiraz lovers.
“We make No. 1 with a power yet finesse which allows
us to change the nuances of the wine as we see fit,”
Nigel Dolan said.
“At its heart is an ideal which aims to set a benchmark
for Barossa Shiraz, while continuing to offer something
special to those who have loyally followed the wine at each
vintage.”
Saltram 2001 No. 1 Shiraz is deep garnet red with purple
hues. Aromas of blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry, spice,
chocolate and liquorice with a subtle coffee bean and cedar
oak influence develop into an intense yet balanced palate
bursting with ripe, spicy varietal fruit. The palate is
given complexity by subtle oak coffee bean characters and
wonderful savoury flavours. The powerful, weighty palate
has firm, grainy tannins and a long, rich finish. Complex
and satisfying to drink now, this wine will also benefit
from careful cellaring for enjoyment in the years to come.
Timely, careful harvesting resulted in rich ripe fruit
which was then crushed into traditional-style open fermenters.
A long ferment process ensued, with extended maceration
to ensure full extraction of fruit flavour, colour and tannin
structure. The wine was then pressed and racked before being
transferred into new and seasoned American and French oak
barrels for 24 months maturation. After maturation Nigel
carefully assessed each barrel before blending and bottling.
“The 2001 vintage was extremely warm, so we took
care to unsure the best fruit was selected. We ended up
taking only the very best fruit from low-yielding vineyards
in both the Northern regions of the Eden Valley and Central
and Eastern regions of the Barossa Valley,” Nigel
said.
“In the end the Barossa Valley fruit was the dominant
contributor to this wine, but the Eden Valley element ensured
the wine was intense, with perfect balance and finesse and
a true expression of Barossa Shiraz.”
The wine holds a proud position as the cornerstone of the
Saltram family and has become a willing barometer of great
Barossa winemaking. Now, more than ever, it also sits as
the benchmark for this remarkably successful and award-winning
winery and Winemaker –seeking to delight both loyal
and new Saltram drinkers.
