Saltram No. 1 Shiraz stands proudly as one of the great
Australian red wines and as one of the truly great Barossa
Shiraz wines. Created by Nigel Dolan in 1993 as his tribute
to the classic Saltram wines made by his father Brian and
Peter Lehmann, the No. 1 has become one of the country’s
most awarded wines.
Since the 1993 vintage the No. 1 has won numerous awards
at major wine shows across Australia. The secret to the
No. 1’s success lies in the extraordinary heritage
of old Barossa vines along the eastern fringes of the Valley
floor. Fruit from these old wines is gently crushed before
being made in open fermenters and subsequently matured in
French and American oak for around 18-24 months. The resultant
wine is always intensely flavoured yet beautifully integrated
and balanced, best enjoyed five to 15 years after vintage.
Fruit for the 2002 No.1 Shiraz has been sourced from mature
yielding vineyards on the central and eastern side of the
Barossa Valley floor. The 2002 vintage was milder than average
and produced fully ripened Shiraz, giving this wine intense
concentration of flavour and tannin. The wine is deep red
in colour, intensely aromatic, rich and warm in the classic
Barossa style. The palate has power and weight with ripe,
spicy full-bodied fruit and coffee flavours combining with
some wonderful savoury hints. The finish shows a firm texture
and anextraordinary long, drying finish.
The wine has been awarded 3 Trophies and 8 Gold medals
