Halliday Wine Companion

“From vines c1900 grown in the Eden Valley. What a wine this is for its complexity, depth of flavour and its sheen. Fantastic purple-noir; layers of dark fruit lifted with a heady fragrance of lavender and violets, a sprinkling of licorice and wood spices lead onto a full-bodied palate. No shortage of tannins, yet there's this bright acid lift on the finish, both ensure this will be long-lived.”

Viticulture

Viticulture

The 2014/2015 season in the Barossa was characterised by a long dry period, a relatively cool Summer extending to a very hot harvesting period. Winter rainfall was above average however Spring saw one of the driest since 2006 and well below the average. The combination of the dry Spring and fluctuating temperatures led to poor flowering conditions and fruit set. During February, temperatures soared with numerous heat spikes pushing mean average temperatures well above the average. The result was an early vintage leading to low yielding Shiraz displaying distinctly varietal characters with dense colour, lively aromatics and velvety tannins.

The 2015 Journal Shiraz was matured for seventeen months primarily in a seasoned French oak vat with the balance maturing in new French oak barrels. Maturation in larger vats enables the pithy tannins to soften and complex over time while ensuring the individual characteristics of the vineyard are centre stage.
