Our Vineyards

Saltram is situated on the Western Ridge of the town of Angaston in the Barossa Valley.

Saltram Rolling Hill Vineyard
Quality Fruit

Saltram fruit comes primarily from the 45-hectare vineyard surrounding our winery and cellar door, from the cooler hills of Eden Valley and the warmer areas across the Barossa Valley floor.

The Saltram Vineyard has predominantly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties, and some smaller plantings of other varieties such as Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

Saltram Hills Vineyard
State-of-the-art irrigation

Saltram vines are supported by a variety of trellising and irrigated via drip irrigation – the latter developed in the 1950's to allow viticulturists to grow grapevines in climates with low rainfall.

Today, vineyards within a range of climatic conditions use drip irrigation to better control the amount of water each vine receives. By stressing the vine at certain times, and irrigating it at others, we can optimise crop levels and improve grape quality.

Saltram Autumn Vineyard Vines
Special Blends

Vines on the Saltram vineyard are supplementary irrigated, with drip irrigation applied sparingly other than extended dry spells and extreme weather events, especially with older vines planted in the 1950's and 1960's. This encourages the vines to develop deeper, self-sustaining root systems and produce smaller berries with concentrated flavours and higher tannin levels

In good years, select parcels from theses vines go into our renowned Saltram No.1 Shiraz and various other special blends.
